Though not permitted on the Salt Flats, private and public camping areas are nearby. ![]() The Bonneville Salt Flats are 125 miles west of Salt Lake City, tucked just 4 miles inside Utah’s I-80 border with Nevada. Many types of vehicles race during the time trials, including motorcycles, dragsters, diesel and electric vehicles, and vehicles powered by jet engines and rockets. Major racing events in 2018 include Speed Week (August 11-17), Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (August 25-30), World of Speed (September 14-17), and Mike Cook’s Bonneville Shootout (September 20-24). At the center of the flats, the salt is 5 feet thick. The Bonneville Salt Flats and International Raceway is the fastest place on earth, hosting several racing events throughout the summer months.Įach winter, water covers the Salt Flats. The salt flats are used for land speed racing, archery competitions, running races, photography, videography, and scientific research projects.
